Article # 1 (France): EasyJet fined in France over disabled passenger

A British airline: easyJet has been charged with fines many times due to discrimination against handicapped passengers such as banning partly paralyzed woman to get aboard, forcing wheelchair woman to get off and refusing to take three wheelchair users on board. First of all, easyJet has been slapped with 60,000 euros by the French court for not allowing partially paralyzed woman to get on a flight to his son’s funeral because she was by herself. Additionally, easyJet has been fined for forcing wheelchair woman to get off a Paris-Nice flight in March 2010. Moreover, 70,000 euros was charged as fines by the French court for refusing three wheelchair users to take a flight between November 2008 and January 2009. In conclusion, easyJet seems to face a lot of fine charges regarding disabled discrimination.

I chose this article because I believe the problem is on the majorities like us, the way we treat and view the minorities such as handicaps and homosexuals by disregarding the individuals’ uniqueness as well as having prejudice and discrimination against them. First of all, the majorities, who we consider ourselves normal, should respect the differences and unusualness of some minorities as diversity in our community. In addition, we should not have prejudice towards disabled people, for example patronizing pity and provide less opportunity in workplaces and I am very sensitive about this issue because one of my friends from high school has autism, who struggled a lot because his first impression was always not pleasing to others, but the truth is he was just like everyone else. Since most of the times prejudice leads to discrimination against handicapped people, breaking down our prejudice thoughts will automatically reduce discrimination, where the majorities think that they are superior to the minorities in every way. In conclusion, the majorities unconsciously magnify the problems associated with the minorities to seem like a bigger deal, mainly due to ignorance of individuality, prejudice and discrimination.

Article # 2 (France): France reopens euthanasia debate with right-to-die ruling

France’s top administrative court has ruled that doctors were allowed to take a tetraplegic man off life, which has brought back up a controversial topic regarding euthanasia in France with the following events: a patient named Vincent Lambert, the President Francois Hollande’s promise and rights given to doctors. First of all, Lambert was in vegetative state since the motorcycle accident that happened in 2008, which had caused him brain-damage that led into a comma. In addition, Hollande has assured to introduce new right-to-die legislation at his 2012 election, but has yet to convey on his claim. Therefore, the legal battles over Lambert’s fate along with other cases have been kept debated, but the Council of State finally ruled that doctors were permitted to stop the medical support that kept Lambert alive. In conclusion, euthanasia has always been a controversial topic and is still today in France.

After I went through euthanizing my dog due to old age and cancers two years ago, without any hesitation, I believe human euthanasia should be legalized worldwide because of the following reasons: dying with dignity, the reduction of family’s sufferance and finally organ donation after euthanasia. First of all, patients with incurable and hopeless illness have the right to refuse the prolongation of their life and to end their lives with dignity. In addition, we already know that incurable illnesses cannot be cured completely and further treatments only extend the pains of both the patients and their families. Finally, patients who are willing to donate their organs will feel worthwhile by saving other people’s life, instead of waiting and living hopelessly through prolongation of life. In conclusion, we euthanize our companion animals instead of letting them suffer pain at the end of their lives, I strongly consider that people should able to make the same choice without any restrictions by law.

Article # 3 (France): Calls for tighter school security after French teacher killed by pupil's mother

The terrified incident of teacher stabbed by student’s mother has shocked the entire France because of the following three main events: pupil’s mother was placed in a psychiatric institution before, teacher stabbed to death in front of young pupils and tighter security to protect teachers needs to be held urgently. First of all, pupil’s mother has been reported that she was suffering from delusions of harassment and she was placed in the psychiatric institution, for neglecting her 6 years old daughter, and is now held at the psychiatric hospital again after the stabbing. Due to her conditions, she might have misunderstood that the teacher was mistreating her daughter at school and attacked the victim in front of the whole class, consist of 6 years old students who were drawing the pictures of the attack. Finally, BenoĆ®t Hamon, the education minister, claimed that countermeasures will be taken to protect the school and teachers better, but Hamon did not specifically mention what steps will be held. In conclusion, French teacher knifed by her student’s mother was a both tragic and terrible case that happened recently in France.

After reading this article, I believe teachers should not be treated in this manner because I consider teachers are important in motivating students, especially in a primary and a secondary school, like how I was inspired by my chemistry teacher in high school in three ways: I was able to find my field of interest, aptitude and ultimate goal. First of all, I discovered my passion towards the subject chemistry in my sophomore year after taking Mr. Jung’s class who was always very passionate to motivate students and never needed to use textbook, but sadly he got fired because many complaints were filed at him for not following the textbook curriculum. In addition, he pointed out that my space perception ability was exceptional compared to other classmates, which made me easier to understand the structure and mechanism of organic chemistry in depth. Now, I just finished my freshmen year in college and I will apply for Chemistry major in order to achieve my final goal to go to a pharmacy school which if it were not for him, I might not be here today. In conclusion, teachers play important role for some students in motivating and helping to find one’s talent and thus teachers should be appreciated and respected.
