Final Essay
All individuals have their own perspective to view and interpret the
world differently based on background, knowledge, and experience. As a
foreigner born in Korea, I have always been living in a multi-cultural
environment and I have to admit that transferring from a Taiwanese school to a
diverse international school was undoubtedly the most significant turning point
in shaping who I am today. From this transition, not only did I become more
flexible in accepting and bonding with new friends from different cultures, I
also realized how wide the world is and how limited my point of view was. Now,
allow me to share three articles that I have chosen from my classmates’ blog regarding
bullying, education and same-sex marriage.
First of all, I chose the article, titled “Finland Finds Pair Guilty of
Mass Murder Plot,” found by the blogger named Seon Ho Kim, because a friend of
mine dropped out of high school for a while due to severe bullying and that he wasted
three years to get back to school and to finally graduate. According to the
article, a man and a woman who had hatred toward society, due to getting
bullied at school, motivated them to slaughter at least 50 people at the
Finland’s largest university. In addition, Seon Ho Kim mentioned that this is
why we should be concerned about school violence and that these criminals should
be punished. Personally, I agree with his opinions and that I think school
bullying should be prevented or else bullying can lead to behavior, social and
emotional problems. First of all, aggressive and violent children followed to
adulthood have higher risk of criminal behavior, alcoholism and antisocial
personality disorder. Also, children who get bullied are often excluded by
their peers and this can lead to dropping out of school or even suicide in
extreme situation. Lastly, according to the National Institute of Child Health
and Human Development (NICHD) research, the result came out to be very
interesting that not only victims of bully are at high risk for depression, but
also those who bully others are as well. In conclusion, bullying at school
should be stopped in order to prevent physical, societal and sentimental
problems.
In addition, I selected the article “Greece Should
Be Protecting Coding Lessons in Schools, Not Cutting Them” found by the blogger
named Jae Hyeok Heo because I believe students should be exposed to various
fields outside of core subjects like how I did Romeo and Juliet in Stage
Theater class and played alto saxophone for Concert Band class. As reported by
the article, the Greek government had removed coding classes from high school
curriculum in Greece because they claimed that knowing how to handle technologies
are much more essential in modern societies, but parents and teachers are
against this education policy. In addition, Jae Hyeok Heo suggested that he was
neutral on this issue by saying coding classes are necessary because Greece is
good at it and computer or digital skills will be necessary in the future.
Personally, I disagree with the Greek government because I believe education in
primary and secondary level should focus on equipping students with three qualities:
motivation towards field of interest, diligence and time management skills.
First of all, middle and high school students are necessary to learn many
subjects in order for them to find their passion towards own interest and thus
I believe removing coding class will not benefit students because it eliminates
opportunity. Next, school education can train students to become diligent at
keeping track of a massive amount of workloads through assignments, projects,
tests and presentations prior to enter a real society. Finally, students can
benefit from education by acquiring good time management skills that can lead
to increase in effectiveness. In conclusion, I consider students in
middle and high school should try various fields to find their interest as well
as be equipped with diligence and good time management skills.
Finally, I chose the
article, "Mexican Supreme Court Rules against
Same-Sex Marriage Ban,"
found by the blogger named Min Ji Kim because I believe people all around the world should have an open mind in order for
effective cultural exchanges where globalization is taking place in the 21st
century. According to the article, the Mexican Supreme Court claimed banning
same-sex marriage in the state of Baja California is now considered as
illegitimate because not allowing same-sex marriage violates the right of self-determination,
right to freely develop their personality and rights for equality. In addition,
Min Ji Kim agreed with this new change and suggested that right for equality is
given to everyone. Personally, I agree with her and I believe that same-sex
marriage should be legalized all around the world because of equality, rights
and increase in adoption rate. First of all, equality is granted to everyone
and no one should ever be discriminated by others just because some individuals
are special and this uniqueness must be respected as diversity in the
community. Next, right is also granted to every individual for making decisions
totally based on their own beliefs and needs, hence same-sex marriage is not
wrong so gay people should never feel guilty. Last of all, abortion and orphans
are the consequences caused by irresponsible heterosexual couples mainly due to
unprotected sex and financial reasons and thus by allowing same-sex marriage,
more and more same-sex couples can adopt children from orphanages. In
conclusion, it is now clear that same-sex marriage must be permitted worldwide
because there will be quite a few positive benefits to society.
In summary, I have
chosen three articles from different bloggers about bullying, schooling and homosexual
marriage. For the article about victims of bullying had slaughtered at least 50
people in Finland’s University, Seon Ho Kim and I both agreed that the
attackers should be punished and that we should focus our attention to try to
reduce school bullying. In addition, the article about removing coding class, Jae Hyeok Heo suggested that keeping coding class and
replace it with handling technologies both have advantages, but I disagreed
with this because I believe education in middle and high school level
should focus on giving students opportunity to try variety of fields to find
one’s own interest. Lastly, the article regarding banning same-sex marriage
will be considered unconstitutional by the Mexican Supreme Court, Min Ji Kim
and I both agreed that same-sex marriage should be legalized by respecting the
rights for equality granted to everyone. To conclude, even with the same issues
given, people can still have the same or different arguments and aspects to
bring up because individuals have different standpoints.
